NHS Thanet Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) pledged its commitment to to changing how we think and act about mental health in the workplace at the Kent Mental Health Festival this week.

CCG governing body member and mental health lead Dr Jihad Malasi joined colleagues from neighbouring east Kent CCGs to sign the Time to Change Employer Pledge during the event at Folkestone’s Leas Cliff Hall on Wednesday 11 October.

The pledge is a national initiative that encourages employers to commit to tackling stigma and changing attitudes to mental health in the workplace.

Dr Malasi said: “1 in 6 British workers are affected by conditions like anxiety, depression and stress every year, and mental ill-health is the leading cause of sickness absence in the UK.

“It’s very important that employers look after the mental health of staff:  tackling stigma can make a real difference to sickness absence rates, staff wellbeing and productivity. So we’re delighted to show our support for Time to Change by backing this excellent initiative.”

The CCG will work with Time to Change to develop an action plan promoting mental health and wellbeing in the workplace, supporting colleagues with mental health needs and tackling stigma.
